Hawa Mahal, the “Palace of Winds”, is Jaipur’s most photographed monument — a five-storey pink-sandstone façade of 953 latticed windows (jharokhas) built in 1799 so the royal women could watch the street below unseen. It stands on the edge of the old walled city, a few minutes’ walk from Badi Chaupar, the eastern terminus of the Pink Line.
